  • Fort San Felipe del Morro is an awe-inspiring attraction for the history buff and tourist alike. The fort was built in the 16th century and is a World Heritage Site. Visitors can view the old canons, cannon balls, bayonets and other artillery. Its panoramic view of the Atlantic Ocean is not to be missed.

 

  • Hiking enthusiasts won’t want to miss out on the trails of Mount Isabel de Torres. Starting at sea level, the hike takes you through beautiful botanical gardens and rainforests, and finishes on top of the mountain where you can enjoy a lunch accompanied by an awesome view of Puerto Plata bay. There is also the option of a cable car ride to take you to the summit to enjoy the views and natural beauty.

 

  • Shop-till-you-drop in downtown Puerto Plata where you can enjoy a range of craft stores and affordable restaurants. Be sure to see the ancient Victorian Gingerbread Buildings in town and take a relaxing walk through the Parque Luperon.

 

  • You won’t want to miss out on taking the kids to the Columbus Aguaparque. Arguably the Caribbean’s finest attraction of its kind, this water park is a popular favorite with children of all ages. It’s open daily from 10am until 6pm and entry is US$10 for the day. Special group rates for larger parties.

 

  • The Brugal Rum Factory produces more than a million and a half liters of white/dark rum per annum. Entry is free and guests are taken on a tour of the factory which culminates in a complimentary Brugal Rum drink. There is also a gift shop where visitors can purchase the various flavors of Brugal Rum. Open Monday to Friday from 9am until noon and 2pm until 5pm.

 

  • The Amber Museum opened in 1982 and is one of Puerto Plata’s best known tourist attractions. The museum contains thousands of amber pieces, some preserving ancient species from millions of years ago. The amber encased mosquito located within the museum was used in the blockbuster film Jurassic Park. Open from 9am until 5pm, Monday through Saturday and admission is only US$2.

 

  • First built in 1934, the Cathedral of San Felipe in Puerto Plata is an architectural masterpiece. There is no tour involved; however, the cathedral makes an awesome photo opportunity.

 

  • Puerto Plata’s Museum of Taino Art features the works of art of the native Taino people who inhabited the island before European settlement. There is also an excavated tomb at the museum.

 

  • Rancho Lorilar is the largest ranch on the North Coast of the Dominican Republic and they offer full day and half day horseback riding tours. Energetic, English-speaking stable and guide staff ensure you have a memorable day. This is always a highlight for visitors to the Dominican Republic.
